How would you like to introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello, readers. My name is Ankita Ghosh. I recently completed my B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration from IHM Pusa, New Delhi and have joined Marriott India as a Voyager. I have been schooled at Sacred Heart Convent Jamshedpur as well as La Martiniere for Girls Kolkata. All three institutions have notable alumni. Hospitality was something which came to me as a surprise life choice, despite my mother being an ex-hotelier, but my father was the one who has been my guide and support strength throughout the years at Pusa. I like to read novels, sing, socialize and also, explore places.
How was your life at IHM Pusa?
My life at Pusa was just one word, amazing. Pusa has won the coveted title of No. one Hotel Management Institute in India many times in the last decade. Boasting some of the best faculties of India, who have won numerous national awards, Pusa has excellent laboratory equipment and a library of over 5000 books. Therefore, education was coated with finessé and delivered to us every day. Whether Front office or Food Production, Hotel Engineering or Food Science, everything was taught with zeal and helped me throughout my three years at Pusa. I was a Hosteller as Delhi is not my hometown. And trust me, there is nothing compared to hostel life with friends.
How was your IT experience?
I did my 17 weeks industrial training from Hyatt Regency Kolkata. My training was to be completed in my fourth semester at college. I adorably cherish my IT experience and without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I was rotated in the major departments along with a stint at the HR department. I will not lie, it was extensive, grueling but it was all worth the blood and sweat. They say IT is the turning point of every HM student’s life and it is true. Exposure is the key to choose what you want to do afterward i.e. which department you want to sit for, whether hotel or retail, etc.
Please tell us whole the process of cracking the MT?
Management Trainee is one of the many programs offered by companies visiting IHM Pusa. Operational trainee, Executive trainee, and Corporate trainee programs are also present. Various companies have myriad procedures. Some meticulously examine you through Group Discussions, Personal interviews and some through online interviews and tests. For Marriott Voyage, it was the latter. There was an online interview, test and finally two rounds of interviews.
What kind of skills are required to crack MT in your department?
In Sales and Marketing, one needs to be smart, have a passion for selling and should know how to handle customers. Most important point is one should know how to sell. Determination and eagerness to learn are key pointers the recruiters look for in your CV.
What are your responsibilities at JW Marriott?
I will be going through an 18 months training in the Sales department with exposures in Reservations, and Sales. After 18 months, I will be joining as an Assistant Manager in Sales and Marketing. Currently, my responsibilities include handling calls and making reservations.
How much marks matter for cracking the MT program?
The matter of marks depends upon the person sitting across the table. Though yes, of course, every company would like to pick the creme de la creme of your college, so yes when you are in college, try to give your best in studies as well as extra curricular.
What would be your message to young students of the industry who want to crack MT program?
Put your best foot forward in everything. If you fall, get up, dust yourself, laugh and move ahead smiling. Be like the sun, shine bright through everything and take your strides with determination and a free mind. That’s the key to success in this industry.
